From the very beginning we have been accompanying the situation and we fully understand these are not the perfect conditions to anticipate your next cycling holidays as these are times when we are very much focused on our families health and well-being. We empathise with all our travellers concerns, especially those who are about to join us for a ride in 2020, and we do not wish to expose anyone to a health risk, be it our guests or our guides.

Regarding the measures we have put into place so that we can contain the development of this pandemic, we have advanced the following measures, effective from the 12th March 2020:

- Our Lisbon and Porto offices are currently closed until the 01st of April 2020, and we will revisit this date if needed;

- Meanwhile, our staff is working from home, and remain as available as always, on the following e-mail: ridewithus@llride.com or telephone at 00351 217 590 365 - we are here to answer all your questions;

Update on our cancellation terms - Postponement option

Even though our cancellation policy still stands, due to the current situation, we are offering our guests the possibility to avoid cancellation fees, by asking for a postponement of their tour.

Postponement options for tours running from March 12th to October 31st 2020*:

As we've been witnessing recent travel restrictions, we wanted to provide you with specific postponement options so you can keep your credit for future tours with us. The below information applies for all of our standard guided and self-guided tours operated in Portugal, from March 12th to October 31st 2020.

If you choose to postpone a departure or request a change in one of our standard self-guided or guided tours in Portugal because of Coronavirus concerns, the following terms will apply*:

  • If you choose to postpone your tour up to 30 days before the tour start date  - We will keep the entire value that you payed on account, to be used by Dec 31, 2021. This value would be yours to use in any Live Love Ride tour until the 31st of December 2021, and we would not charge any postponement penalty. The value that would remain on your account is not refundable, not transferable to other guests and subject to availability.
  • 30 or less days before the tour start date, the postponement option would not be available.

If you don't wish to postpone your tour, our standard cancellation terms apply.

Live Love Ride cancellations*:

Live Love Ride does not typically cancel a trip once it is guaranteed. However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation, we will consider cancelling a trip in the 30 days prior to the tour start date based on information provided from the Portuguese Government or the Portuguese National Health Directorate (Direcção Geral da Saúde), with your health in mind.

If Live Love Ride cancels a standard Guided or Self-Guided tour according to the information from one of the institutions above mentioned, the following will apply*:

  • You may keep all your money on account for a future Live Love Ride tour or service to be used by December 31, 2021.

*please note that for Group or Custom Tours the terms may vary, and we will communicate them to each group individually. Also, please note that the price for future tours might differ.

We do hope the virus can be contained and that all those affected by it can recover safely. We will be accompanying the situation as it unfolds and will contact you in case any changes occur – please feel free to reach out to us at ridewithus@llride.com if you have any further questions.

Stay safe,

The Live Love Ride team

Please check in this page as we will be revising it regularly – please contact us with questions about your specific departure dates at ridewithus@llride.com and we will be happy to reply.

Integrated in our initiative "1 ride = 1 tree", Live Love Ride has again helped plant 200 trees alongside Portuguese ONG "Plantar 1 Árvore".

Plantar1arvore Live Love Ride

The plantation site was located in "Mata Nacional do Bussaco", an ancient, walled arboretum in the Centro region of Portugal and home to one of the finest dendrological collections in Europe, located within the Bussaco mountain range. The forest measures 1450 meters by 950 meters and covers an area of 105 hectares, it is home to more than 250 species of trees and remarkable bushes. It is threatened by invasive species and by storms that knock down hundreds of trees, some of them centuries old, creating spaces that need reforestation in order to combat invasive species, densify the affected area and restore biodiversity.

The team dedicated itself to promoting biodiversity, natural regeneration and ecological succession through the planting of 200 plants:

Medronheiro ( Strawberry tree) - 72
Azevinho (Holly) - 25
Carvalho alvarinho (Alvarinho Oak) - 34
Sobreiro ( Cork Oak) - 33
Pinheiro Manso (Pine Tree) - 13
Abeto (Spruce) - 23

Thank you to all the volunteers that participated! And a big thank you to all the guests that joined our bike tours and helped us give back to nature, for a total of 400 trees planted in 2019 - we'll keep on cherishing our ecosystem as much as we can, so we can continue to appreciate it's beautiful landscapes.

Integrated in our initiative "1 ride = 1 tree", Live Love Ride has again helped plant 200 trees in Sintra Sierra, alongside Portuguese ONG "Plantar 1 Árvore", on the 15th and 18th of December.

Over 38 volunteers associated themselves to this cause and had to fight the elements to complete our planting, as "Elsa" storm hit Portugal hard this week! Nevertheless, we got to plant several endogenous trees in a plot in the Sierra, promoting the richness of that ecosystem. Here's the list of trees planted earlier this week:

50 carvalho-negral;
46 pilriteiro;
30 murta;
4 loureiro;
3 medronheiro;
26 Azevinho;
11 carvalho-alvarinho;
30 castanheiro;

Portugal world's leading destination

Being the sunniest country in Europe, Portugal is a great destination to plan your cycling holiday during the winter. With around 3000 sunny hours per year, it has a mediterranean climate with significant influence from the Atlantic Ocean. In the North of the country, during winter months, you'll find high humidity with some precipitation but, down south, humidity gradually reduces and climate becomes drier - average annual precipitation down south is less than 500 mm.

So, during the first months of the year, it's generally advisable to explore the south of Continental Portugal - Algarve and Alentejo's coastlines or inland Alentejo - or visit the Azores archipelago, home to a sub-tropical climate and right in the middle of the warm watered Gulf Stream, meaning that it never gets too cold or too hot - during the winter months the average temperatures can hover around mid 50s F (14 C), but you can expect to find all the seasons in one single day in São Miguel island.

Spring in Portugal begins early, as nature wakes up in late February - April is still a bit rainy, but the weather becomes much warmer.

Here are a few options we suggest to plan a winter cycling holiday in Portugal for 2020:

Bike Tour in the Southwest Coast - Alentejo and Algarve

This 7 day tour will have you explore the Portuguese Southwest Coast's natural park, and is located in the warmest regions in Portugal, with lowest precipitation levels, making it a great winter destination for cycling. In this tour, you'll ride from start to the end of the “Costa Vicentina” natural park, experiencing the laidback and relaxed atmosphere of this region of the Alentejo and Algarve. This is a Mountain bike tour, in which you'll explore the beautiful backroads and trails by the cliffs and beaches of the Southwest Alentejo natural park, the finest preserved stretch of European coastline, covering over 100 km.Ride by long stretches of sand and small beaches nested between the cliffs and rocks like such as Almograve, Monte Clérigo, Arrifana or Praia do Amado, many of them preserved in a virtually unspoilt state, explore quaint fishermen villages, their local gastronomy and wines and ride up to Cape of São Vicente and the nearby Sagres promontory, that housed the famous nautical school founded by the Infante D. Henrique in the 15th century.

You can book a private self-guided or guided tour in the region, or even join a group tour starting on the 23rd of February, during "Carnival" - visit our group tour calendar at https://llride.com/open-dates-calendar/

Touring Alentejo Wine Country

This is an easy to moderate bike touring experience, where you'll ride by the UNESCO world sites of Évora, Monsaraz and Vila Viçosa, exploring the vineyards of one of the world's best wine countries. A bike tour in the sunny Alentejo plains, suited for every type of rider, where you'll explore the natural beauty of the vineyards and olive fields, admire the Alqueva lake and its Dark Sky reserve as well as trying the delicious local gastronomy. You'll start riding from Évora, capital of Alentejo and, for the following days, you'll be riding by the backroads of Alentejo, visiting the monuments of the region like the Almendres Cromlech or the Diana temple, tasting the beautiful wines of Cartuxa and Esporão and enjoying the rural landscape of the Alentejo "Montado". After exploring Évora in a series of loop rides that can take you as far or as close as you wish, you'll ride towards Monsaraz, to explore the margins of the Alqueva Lake and the fortified village atop the lake. From your hotel in Monsaraz, you can choose to explore the region's vineyards in several loop rides. Leaving Monsaraz, you'll ride north, towards Vila Viçosa, in te middle of the marble region, to explore the marble quarries, Ducal Palace and castle and, in a series of loop rides from your hotel, ride up to Estremoz, Serra D'Ossa, Borba, and more.

You can book a private self-guided or guided tour in the region during the winter months. Click here for more info on this cycling holiday in Alentejo.

Bike Tour in Azores - Cycling Holidays in São Miguel

On this weeklong road bike tour you'll be riding by São Miguel island, in the Azores archipelago, voted best island destination of the world by National Geographic and located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Europe and the USA. The 9 Azores Islands are the result of the outpouring of lava from the ocean floor, as it stands on the ridge between the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America. Its sub-tropical climate, evergreen fields with luxuriant pastures, flowers, endemic flora and fauna make it a great destination for cycling enthusiasts who want to embark in a challenging adventure in one of the most unique and quaint destinations in the world.

You can book a private self-guided or guided tour in the region during the winter months. Click here for more info on this cycling holidays in Azores.
